The Benefits of Our Completeness in Christ, Part 1

July 14, 2019 Speaker: Michael Knight Series: Colossians

Topic: Christian Growth Passage: Colossians 2:11–15

Christians are the only ones who have true liberty. We are no longer slaves to sin. The old self before salvation is freed from the domination of sin at the moment of salvation. Our victory comes through the resurrection power of Christ. Let’s examine this truth in Colossians 2:11-15.

1. The sin nature’s power is cut off. (Colossians 2:11)

- Throughout Scripture, circumcision is used symbolically to illustrate man’s need for having his heart cleansed.

- This “circumcision of Christ” refers to a spiritual circumcision that takes place at salvation when a believer’s sin nature is “cut away,” and sin no longer has control over him. (Deuteronomy 10:16, 30:6; Jeremiah 9:26; Romans 2:29)
- Christians are free from the domination of sin. (Romans 6:11-14; Galatians 2:20)

2. Christ’s resurrection power is put on. (Colossians 2:12-13a)
- “Baptism” is not referring to water baptism.
- “Baptism” refers to the spiritual union of the believer with Christ that takes place at salvation. We are baptized into the body of Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:13)
- “Working” refers to God’s active power. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead.
- Christians will not only be raised with Christ in the future but receive the resurrection power of Christ now!
(Romans 10:9; Ephesians 2:5)

Conclusion:
1. Sin nature’s power is cut off: We are dead to sin.
2. Christ’s resurrection power is put on: We are alive to God.
- We can live in VICTORY!
- Jesus Christ died to deliver you from sin this week. You don't have to succumb to sin. We have a new Master, and He gives us His power. (Romans 6:14)
