The Mindset of a Godly Steward, Pt. 2

March 25, 2018 Speaker: Michael Knight Series: Biblical Giving

Topic: Biblical Giving Passage: Matthew 6:19–24

A biblical steward chooses to serve God with his treasure knowing that he cannot serve two masters: God and wealth. Both make totalitarian demands. God is the giver of all good things, including our wealth, and, therefore, we must serve Him with all that He has supplied.

I. I must be satisfied with eternal treasures.

II. I must serve God and God alone. (v. 24)

A. The Decision Between Two Masters

1. The Pharisees taught that you could serve both God and wealth.

2. Christ taught that you could serve either God or wealth, but not both.

A love for money makes things hard:

It hinders people from getting saved. (Matthew 19:23-24)

It hinders Christians from living for Christ. (1 Timothy 6:3-11, 17-19)

-  He is never content and always wants more.

-  He easily falls into temptation which can ruin his life and lead him away from God.

B. The Demand of Two Masters

  1. Both masters make a totalitarian demand. (Romans 12:1)
  2. Both masters demand complete devotion. (Mark 12:30)
  3. It’s all or nothing.

Two Questions:

  • Are you satisfied with laying up treasures in heaven?
  • Are you serving God and God alone?
