The Sovereignty of God in the Christmas Story

December 17, 2017 Speaker: Michael Knight Series: Christmas

Topic: Christmas Passage: Luke 2:1–20

The Sovereignty of God in the Christmas Story
I. A Decree from Caesar Augustus
- He declined to be called king or dictator because he wanted more authority, so he chose "Augustus," meaning exalted one. The Roman Senate honored him with this title. He set himself up as god. He was worshiped like a god.
- A decree was a law.
- There was no freedom under the tyranny of Caesar.
- This came in one of the darkest times in history when people were hopeless.

II. The Response to the Decree
- Everyone responded.
- Two seemingly insignificant people responded:
• Joseph (Matthew 1 - He was a righteous man, probably age 15 or 16.)
• Mary (She was probably 13 or 14 years old.)
- They had to travel over 70 miles just to register to pay taxes.
- The reason for the decree was to fulfill God’s plan of redemption. (Micah 5:2-4)
- The prophecy happened 650 years prior.
- Caesar Augustus was NOT in control. All of this was controlled entirely by God. God determined it in eternity past.
- All the circumstances of the Christmas story were orchestrated to provide salvation for the world.
- The circumstances of the Christmas story were controlled by God. The same God controls our lives today.
- What is God doing? He’s doing His perfect will. He is using difficulty to bring about Christlikeness in the lives of believers in order for Him to receive glory.
- The same God Who is sovereign in the Christmas story is sovereign in our lives today.
